Expedia reported third-quarter net income rose to $176.6 million, or 62 cents per share, compared with $117 million, or 40 cents per share, a year ago. The total value of Expedia’s bookings rose 17 percent in the quarter from a year ago to $6.89 billion. Domestic bookings rose by 16 percent and international bookings gained 17 percent.

Expedia is partnering with Hotwire to offer a “blind-booking” option to travellers looking for bargains on hotel room rates. The companies say the partnership, officially announced Monday, will allow travellers to choose hotel rooms in more than 25,000 hotels worldwide for as much as 50 per cent off comparable online rates. Customers won’t see the name of the property before they book.

Spain’s Amadeus IT Holding SA is seeking a buyer for its 99.4 percent stake in European online travel agent Opodo, and has hired JPMorgan to advise on a sale, three people familiar with the matter said on Monday. Opodo competes with U.S. rivals such as Expedia Inc , Priceline.Com Inc and Orbitz Worldwide Inc . It made EBITDA of 17.2 million euros in the first half of the year.

Expedia has created a luggage packing game for consumers as part of an autumn discounting push. Offers on overseas travel until March 2001 are being made available for bookings made by October 18. Discounts of up to 35% and free additional nights accommodation are among the deals. The online company claims autumn bookings are already showing 30% stronger growth than for the summer season.

That’s where a new San Francisco startup called Hipmunk comes in. Cofounder Adam Goldstein says Hipmunk’s goal was to “rethink the interface from scratch,” and I’m quite impressed with the results. Users enter the same query that they would on most other sites — origin, destination, departure date, and return date. But instead of giving you a long list of results, Hipmunk lays the flights out on a grid, where flight time is shown on the horizontal axis and flight price is shown on the vertical axis. That means you can see a lot more flights at once, and if you’re interested in flights in a particular time period or price range, you can focus on them right away.

Founded in 1999 by Ross Elder and Andy Firth, Holiday Lettings advertises holiday villas and apartments primarily located in European countries including Spain, France, Italy, Turkey, Cyprus, and Portugal among others. Holiday Lettings had revenues of $8.4 million in 2009.
